A Remedial Massage is where the qualified therapist assesses and treats the muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues of the body to rehabilitate, and to manage any pain and injuries the client may be experiencing.

Assessments are done by asking the client to carry out a range of movements of certain problematic areas. This is so the therapist can see which muscles, tendons, and ligaments need to be worked on and to test the range of movement and strengthen problem areas.

After the massage treatment, the therapist may ask the client to repeat the exercises or tests to determine any improvements, such as improved range of movement and increased muscle strength. This also shows which muscles require more work. The therapist may recommend their client do some stretches at home to help reduce muscle pain and tightness.

Other self-care recommendations may be the use of heat packs on certain areas, the use of muscle creams or gels to treat muscle soreness, and the use of self-massage tools such as a spikey ball to use in between massage treatments.

When for example?

If you are Pregnant.  If you are pregnant, congratulations! but please seek advice from your doctor before getting a massage. You can receive a pregnancy massage with a qualified Prenatal Massage Therapist.
You should not book a massage if you are experiencing any of the following conditions.

  • Contagious diseases. This includes a cold or a flu.
  • Recent vomiting Fever. Your body is trying to fight off an unknown invader. Because massage increases circulation, massage could fight against your body’s defenses.
  • Recent operations or serious injuries – As a Remedial Massage treats ligaments, tendons and muscles through manipulation, it may aggravate the injured area causing more pain and further injury to the area. If you are in the initial stages of an injury (the acute stage) or have had a recent operation it is important for the area to be free from swelling and bruises. After this stage massage can be performed to assist a quicker recovery.
  • When under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
  • Neuritis – occurs when nerves groups become inflamed. This would make Remedial Massage quite intolerable especially when firm pressure is applied.
  • Skin diseases such scabies, impetigo,
Consult your doctor and tell your Therapist if you have any of the following conditions.

Osteoporosis – if you have this you should check with your doctor first. Osteoporosis is when the bones become weak and brittle due to a lack of vitamin D. A Remedial Massage may be too intense for those with this condition. A lighter massage would be more beneficial.

  • Severe Inflammation – where joints are inflamed and swollen Massage Therapists should avoid using massage techniques and trigger points.
  • Varicose veins– if these are treated during a massage it may make the problem worse if heavy pressure is applied. A lighter massage is recommended.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis– the lower leg or calf muscles should not be massaged.
  • Hernia – a lump that is part of an organ through a muscular wall. Hernias should never be pushed inside and quite often surgery is needed to treat this.
  • High Blood Pressure – Remedial Massage can upset your blood vessels so if you have high blood pressure or a heart condition it is recommended that you have a light or more relaxing massage. Treatments recommended for High blood pressure are Swedish massage & Reflexology.
