Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue Massage will aid in relieving long-term pain by stretching out the fascia surrounding muscles.
Deep tissue massage has quite a long after effect as it relaxes soft tissue and the deeper muscles being skeletal muscles. These are the muscles which are responsible for holding us upright by attaching to hip bones, shoulder blades, ribs, elbows, knees, feet they control or play a part in rotation, abduction, adduction, flexion and extension of arms, legs and back.
A deep tissue massage will remove tiny adhesions in the muscle and will assist with future muscle tone, flexibility and aches, and pains.

What is a Deep Tissue Lower Back Massage?
Not all types of massage are the same. Before you book a deep tissue massage because of back pain, it’s advisable to take a moment to learn what “deep tissue” really means. Why might you choose to request this technique versus another option, such as Swedish massage? Here’s a quick overview of the subject:
- Deep tissue massages comprise very slow, powerful strokes using the hand, as opposed to lighter touches and more rapid movements found in other styles of massage. This method results in a “deeper” effect as your massage provider applies pressure to the muscles.
- The pressure used in this type of massage targets more than the soreness in the muscles. It may also help to relieve tension and discomfort in connective tissues — a reason why it is sometimes used for massage elsewhere on the body.
- These types of massage may contribute to improved comfort for some time after you visit the massage therapist, making repeat visits a conventional means for managing chronic pain.

What A Deep Muscle Tissue Massage Can Do for You
A deep muscle tissue massage targets the skeletal muscles. These are the muscles that help us stay upright. They attach to the shoulder blades, hip bones, elbows, feet and knees, and assist with the movement of your body. Because a deep tissue massage targets these muscles, the effects of such a massage last quite long.
A History of Massage
Massage therapy is synonymous with spas and physiotherapy, which are relatively new-fangled inventions. It can, therefore, be tempting to think that massage therapy is a novel treatment. However, massage therapy is one of the oldest strategies for pain relief:
- Massage therapy dates back for more than 5 000 years. Massage was first practiced in ancient India, where it was considered a sacred natural healing practice. Used by Hindus in Ayurveda, it was passed from generation to generation as a method to relieve pain, treat injuries and cure diseases. It spread from ancient India to China, Egypt and Japan.
- Massage therapy spread to the Greek and Roman empires. Massage spread to Greece from ancient Egypt. In Greece, athletes used to massage their bodies before competitions. Hippocrates, known as the father of modern medicine, treated injuries with a type of massage called friction.
- Massage lost its popularity only to regain it later. The prevalence of massage in the western world decreased until the seventeenth century as new scientific discoveries were made about medicine. In 1800, a Swedish doctor called Per Henrik Ling revived massage with his invention of the Swedish Movement Cure to relieve chronic pain. This method later became what is known today as Swedish massage.

Benefits of Different Types of Massage
With something that is so up close and personal, massage is certainly not one size fits all. Just as there have been different massage techniques through the ages, so too do different techniques of massage exist today for various needs. Here are the benefits of three types of deep tissue massage:
- Deep tissue and Swedish massage. This type of massage therapy combines the more intense deep tissue massage with the lighter Swedish massage that targets the soft tissues. The deep tissue massage targets the skeletal muscles, while the Swedish massage works through movements such as stroking, squeezing, rubbing and striking.
- Deep tissue and sports massage. A sports massage, when combined with a deep tissue massage, relieves inflammation and pain in ligaments and tendons. If injured muscles are not treated with a massage, it may lead to the formation of scar tissue. Scar tissue can lengthen the recovery period or lead to permanent damage.
- Back pain and massage therapy. Back pain relief massage therapy can help with a variety of lower-back problems. When the correct muscle is targeted, we can treat back strain by addressing the source, which facilitates pain relief that kicks in quicker and lasts longer.
